Frequently Asked Questions About THCA Pre Rolls

  • What is a THCA pre roll?

  • Do THCA pre rolls get you high?

  • Are THCA pre rolls legal?

  • Will THCA pre rolls show up on a drug test?

  • What's the difference between a regular pre roll, a hash hole, and a diamond-infused pre roll?

  • How do I store THCA pre rolls to keep them fresh?

  • How do I choose the right THCA pre roll — and what do the percentages mean?

A THCA pre roll is a ready-to-smoke joint packed with hemp-derived THCA flower — the same high-quality cannabis plant you’d buy as loose flower, just pre-ground and rolled so it’s ready when you are. THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the natural, non-psychoactive form of THC found in raw cannabis. It’s not the same as the THC that gets you high — at least not until heat is applied. Once you light up, THCA converts into Delta-9 THC through a process called decarboxylation, which is what produces the effects. If you want a deeper breakdown of how that works, our THCA vs. THC guide covers it in plain language. Every pre roll we carry is third-party lab tested — you can verify potency and purity for any batch on our COA page.

Yes — once you smoke one, they do. THCA in its raw form is non-psychoactive, but the moment heat hits it, a chemical reaction called decarboxylation converts it into Delta-9 THC, which is what produces the high. The experience is comparable to smoking traditional cannabis flower. Potency varies based on the THCA percentage listed on each product and the strain’s terpene profile, so effects will differ between a 20% greenhouse pre roll and a 32% private reserve. If you’re newer to cannabis, starting lower and going slow is always the move. Yes — federally and in most U.S. states. THCA pre rolls are hemp-derived and compliant with the 2018 Farm Bill, which established that hemp products containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight are federally legal. THCA flower meets that threshold because THCA is chemically distinct from Delta-9 THC before combustion. That said, federal compliance doesn’t mean every state is on board — a handful of states have enacted their own restrictions on high-THCA hemp products, and laws in this space have been shifting quickly. We don’t ship to Arkansas, Idaho, Minnesota, Oregon, or Rhode Island. Most likely yes, and it’s important to understand why. When you smoke a THCA pre roll, the heat converts THCA into Delta-9 THC. Standard urine drug tests don’t look for THCA — they detect THC metabolites, specifically THC-COOH, which is what your body produces after processing THC. Since smoking a THCA pre roll produces the same metabolites as smoking traditional cannabis, the test result is the same. Research published in clinical pharmacology literature indicates that after a single use, THC metabolites can be detectable in urine for an average of around 42 hours at standard cutoffs — but for frequent or heavy users, that window can stretch to three weeks or longer, depending on individual metabolism, body composition, and testing sensitivity. If you’re subject to drug testing at work or elsewhere, treat THCA pre rolls the same way you’d treat any cannabis product. Our cannabis drug testing guide and dedicated post on whether THCA shows up on a drug test go deeper on this.

A standard pre roll is ground THCA flower rolled in paper — clean, simple, and exactly what it says on the label. A hash hole takes things up a notch: it’s a pre roll with a rope of hash concentrate running through the center, which burns slower, hits harder, and tends to produce a fuller, more complex experience. Our hash holes clock in at 62% THCA, compared to the 17–32% range you’ll see on standard pre rolls. Diamond-infused pre rolls are coated or packed with THCA diamonds — ultra-pure crystalline THCA concentrate — for an even more potent result. The elevated potency in hash holes and diamond pre rolls comes down to how concentrates behave under heat: the conversion from THCA to THC is highly efficient at the temperatures involved in smoking, particularly with concentrate-heavy formats. If you’re new to pre rolls, a standard 1g option is the right starting point. If you’ve got experience and want something stronger and slower-burning, hash holes and infused options are worth the step up. You can also explore our full THCA concentrates selection to see what goes into them.

Keep them cool, dark, and sealed. The three main enemies of a pre roll’s quality are heat, light, and moisture. Terpenes — the compounds responsible for aroma, flavor, and much of the nuanced effect — are highly volatile and begin degrading at temperatures around 70°F, which means a hot car, a sunny windowsill, or a warm pocket is enough to accelerate the loss. A University of Vermont hemp storage study tracking flower over 180 days found that THCA potency held consistent throughout, but noted terpene concentrations would be significantly more vulnerable, particularly as storage time increases. Practically, that means your pre roll will likely stay potent longer than it stays flavorful. An airtight tube, glass jar, or the original packaging works well. If you’re storing multiple pre rolls for more than a few weeks, a humidity pack in the 55–62% relative humidity range will protect against both drying out and moisture buildup. Avoid plastic bags for anything long-term — they don’t protect terpenes well and can impart off-flavors over time. All of our pre rolls ship in protective packaging, and you can check freshness and batch quality anytime on our COA page.

The THCA percentage listed on each pre roll tells you the concentration of THCA in the flower before heat is applied. It’s the clearest signal of how potent the experience is likely to be once smoked, though it’s not the only factor — terpene profile and strain type (sativa, hybrid, indica) shape the character of the effects just as much. As a general guide, pre rolls in the 15–22% range tend to deliver a lighter, more approachable experience. The 22–32% range covers most of our standard pre rolls and represents solid mid-range potency. Anything in the 60%+ territory — our hash holes and diamond-infused pre rolls — is high-potency territory aimed at experienced users. If you want to dig into how different strain types affect the experience, our THCA strain classification guide and terpenes guide are solid starting points. Not sure where to begin?
