What “Going Bad” Actually Means for THCA Flower
Here’s the detail most people miss: the dominant cannabinoid in raw flower isn’t THC. It’s THCA — the acidic precursor that only becomes THC when you apply heat. That distinction changes the whole degradation story.
When flower “goes bad,” three things happen, and they happen at different speeds.
First, the small amount of active THC already present in cured flower slowly converts to CBN, the cannabinoid associated with heavy sedation. A 2026 University of Mississippi stability study tracked this drift at room temperature and found the THC fraction consistently less stable than CBD over the same period. That’s why old flower hits differently — sleepier, flatter, less bright.
Second, terpenes leave. These are the volatile aromatic compounds that give each strain its smell and much of its character. They’re physically fragile, and they evaporate long before cannabinoids break down. This is why the nose knows first.
Third, moisture moves. Flower that dries out becomes harsh and crumbly. Flower that takes on too much moisture crosses into territory labs actually test for — we’ll cover that line in detail below.
Notice what’s not on that list: rotting, curdling, spoiling. Cannabis flower is a dried plant product, not perishable food. Nothing in a properly cured jar “goes off” the way milk does. How Long THCA Flower Lasts, by Storage Method
This is the section to bookmark. Here’s the timeline, from longest-lasting to shortest.
- The freezer — years. In the longest study on record, researchers publishing in Forensic Science International tracked stored cannabis over four years and found nearly 100% of THC had degraded in room-temperature samples, while freezer-stored samples kept theirs. Whole buds, airtight container, freezer. That’s the method that held up.
- The fridge, whole buds — many months to a year-plus. Cold but above freezing slows the chemistry without the freeze-thaw risk. Keep buds whole; grinding before storage multiplies the surface area exposed to air.
- Airtight, opaque jar at room temperature — about a year of solid quality. This is the standard stash setup, and it’s fine. Keep the jar out of sunlight, keep it sealed, and expect a gradual fade in aroma before anything else changes.
- 18 months — the regulator-tested window. State cannabis regulators run stability testing on stored flower out to 18 months, which tells you the industry itself treats a year and a half as the outer edge of reliable shelf life.
- Four years at room temperature — near-total THC loss. Same four-year study, different storage condition. Flower left in ordinary room-temperature storage for that long still looks like flower. It just doesn’t work like it anymore.
Two patterns worth pulling out of that list. One: temperature mostly changes the speed of degradation, not whether it happens. Two: the difference between a jar on a shelf and a jar in a freezer is measured in years, not weeks.
If your flower is already in a jar on a shelf, don’t panic. Room temperature is acceptable short-term storage — it’s just not the endpoint. Move long-term stock to the freezer and you’ve solved most of the problem.
Light, Air, and Heat: What Actually Damages Flower
Three forces, three different jobs.
Light changes the chemistry itself. The four-year storage study found that light exposure changed which degradation products formed — not merely the pace. A jar on a windowsill isn’t aging faster; it’s aging differently, and not in a good direction. This is why opaque storage isn’t optional. UV light passes through clear glass and gets to work on the cannabinoids inside. Amber glass or a dark cupboard fixes it for free.
Heat only changes the speed. Below about 65°C (150°F), cannabinoid loss is minimal — that’s warmer than any room in your house, so ordinary indoor storage is safely under the line. Heavy loss kicks in around 85–100°C, which is the range you hit on a car dashboard in summer sun, not a warm closet. Air is the slow one. Read that carefully: even the freezer doesn’t stop terpene loss entirely. It only slows it.
Here’s the practical test. Open the jar. If flower that used to be loud now smells like hay, or like nothing at all, the terpenes are gone. That jar can still test within label potency and still be, functionally, old flower. The aroma is your freshness gauge, and a silent jar is telling you the clock ran out even if the cannabinoids haven’t fully drifted yet.
Stale flower from quality decay is your call. It will smoke harsher and taste flatter. Some people finish it anyway; some people use it for cooking, where heat does its own work on flavor. Neither choice is wrong.
Safety decay is about moisture, and it has a number. Properly cured flower sits in a water activity band of roughly 0.3 to 0.6 Aw. Above 0.65, you’re in the zone where microbial growth becomes possible — that’s the threshold labs use, and we’ll walk through exactly what they test for in the next section. The sensory tell is different from staleness: a musty, damp-basement smell, visible fuzz, or buds that feel spongy instead of dry-crumbly.
If you’re unsure, use the sniff test with intent. Hay smell or no smell: stale, your decision. Musty smell: done, no decision to make. You can’t scrape, pick, or bake your way around that one, and the next section explains why.
The Moisture Line: What Labs Test For
Every jar of flower that leaves a licensed facility gets measured against specific numbers, and moisture is the headline one. Here’s what the lab work actually checks, using Maryland’s Cannabis Administration technical standards as the reference point.
Water activity — the pass/fail line at 0.65 Aw. Water activity (Aw) measures how much unbound water is available inside the flower, which is different from total moisture content. Cured flower normally sits between 0.3 and 0.6 Aw. Keeping it below 0.65 is what safeguards against microbial growth, per Maryland Cannabis Administration’s technical standards, and anything above that number fails compliance testing. One decimal separates shelf-stable flower from flower labs won’t sign off on.
Aflatoxin screening — 20 parts per billion. Labs also test for aflatoxins, toxic compounds produced by certain molds. The action limit is 20 ppb, and there is no processing step that removes aflatoxins once they’re present. That’s why the test happens before anything ships, not after.
Visual inspection — visible mold ends the conversation. Regardless of what the instruments read, flower showing visible mold is done. No remediation path exists for it.
A few things this section deliberately doesn’t do: it doesn’t tell you mold will hurt you, and it doesn’t give health guidance. What it does give you is the same yardstick labs use.
